The first edition of Dunglison's New dictionary of medical Science and literature appeard in 1833, just five years after the first edition of Noah Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language. Robley Dunglison, M.D. (1789-1869), a native of England , was professor of medicine at the University of Virginia and served as personal physician to presidents Jefferson, Madison Monroe, and Jackson.
