520 _aDescription: THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY dawned with remarkable economic, political and technological potential for the over 1.83 billion people in the 11 countries of the World Health Organization's South-East Asia Region. Along with the opportunity, the Region faced several public health challenges, including epidemiological transition characterized by a high burden of communicable diseases and a rising incidence of noncommunicable diseases, the unfinished agenda of high maternal and child mortality, and demographic transition. Added burdens included the threat of pandemics with new and emerging pathogens, the ageing population, lifestyle changes, rapid urbanization, high burden of injuries, effects of globalization and climate change, and the global economic crisis. This document showcases our efforts at meeting these challenges and moving towards "Health for All". Citation World Health Organization, Regional Office for South-East Asia. (‎2013)‎.
