Eleven consecutive years of data are now available to assess progress towards the Millennium Development Goals targets for TB control. Findings include that in 2004, there were nine million new cases of TB, and an estimated two million deaths from TB including those co-infected with HIV. The TB incidence rate was stable or falling in five out of six WHO regions, with the number of cases rising in Africa where the TB epidemic is still driven by the spread of HIV.
